ABB Acquires DTN Weather Routing Business for Shipping

Technology provider ABB Marine & Ports has acquired DTN’s portfolio for weather routing in shipping.

The acquisition covers the DTN Shipping portfolio of vessel routing software, including analytics, reporting, and modelling applications. DTN Marine Weather Data is not included in the acquisition and will continue to power the divested solutions following the close of the transaction.

ABB Marine & Ports specialises in electrification and automation, providing electrical propulsion, data-driven decision support and integrated solutions for ship and shore, paving the way to a zero-emission marine industry. It also offers Optimal Speed Routing, a feature designed to optimise vessel speed for substantial fuel savings.

The acquisition brings with it advanced routing services, including a selection of digital solutions that are brought under the ABB Ability portfolio of digital solution as Routing Services. The new additions include the ABB Ability SPOS – Ship Performance Optimization System, ABB Ability Routeguard – Onshore Routing Service, and ABB Ability Fleetguard – Vessel and Weather Monitoring. The vessel and weather monitoring application programming interfaces (APIs) previously developed by DTN are also part of the transaction.

The ABB Marine & Ports team will welcome 85 DTN Shipping employees, most of whom are based in the Netherlands and the Phillippines.

Juha Koskela, Division President, ABB Marine & Ports, said:

DTN specialises in weather forecasts, routing guidance and operational intelligence to improve shipping operations. Its weather intelligence is backed by a proprietary marine forecasting engine that provides the most up-to-date forecasts so shipping operators can adjust operations, track new routes, and streamline responses, ensuring ships take the most efficient and safest routes possible.

Marc Chesover, President and CEO of DTN, commented:

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions as well as completion of applicable works councils’ consultation procedures. It is expected to close during Q2 2024.
