Haven Knox-Johnston boat insurance brand is to be revived after acquisition deal

Haven Knox-Johnston
Business Type: Marine Insurance

Aston Lark, the chartered insurance broker backed by Goldman Sachs, has announced the acquisition of MS Amlin’s Kent-based yacht operation.

MS Amlin’s journey began in 1986 when Haven was formed as a boat insurance provider. Haven then merged in 1992 with Knox-Johnston Insurance Brokers, which was cofounded by Chris Knox-Johnston, the brother of sailing legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, to become Haven Knox-Johnston, part of the Amlin Group. A further merger in 2016 saw the business renamed MS Amlin.

Following the sale to Aston Lark, MS Amlin Boat Insurance will be re-branded Haven Knox-Johnston in January 2021, keeping the existing team of 30 and providing the same high-quality service, with MS Amlin continuing to operate in an underwriting capacity.

Paul Knox-Johnston, Business Development Manager, commented:

The Haven Knox-Johnston brand

Aston Lark, as one of the UK’s top five independent insurance brokers, shares many of the traditional Haven Knox-Johnston values. The combined ethos of customer care and a focus on the smallest detail, makes them the perfect fit to reignite the Haven Knox-Johnston brand.

The existing friendly, knowledgeable crew understand that being an active part of the close-knit boating community, with its unique sense of camaraderie, is key to past and future success. Haven Knox-Johnston stands for straightforward insurance products providing cover at fair prices.

Peter Blanc, Aston Lark Group CEO, said:

In September 2019, MS Amlin announced that nine classes of business and operations no longer formed part of its future strategic direction, including UK Yacht (previously Haven), but where suitable long-term solutions could be found, it would continue to provide underwriting support for high quality MGAs and intermediaries that provide first-class customer service.

Tom Oostra, MS Amlin Insurance SE’s Chief Underwriting Officer for Marine, commented:

Contract terms have been agreed and the deal is expected to formally complete in January.
