Wescom acquires personal locator beacons manufacturer

Emergency distress signal manufacturer Wescom Group has acquired UK-based personal locator beacons manufacturer Marine Rescue Technologies (MRT).

Wescom Group, with its HQ in Derbyshire, UK, is the world’s leading manufacturer and supplier of SOLAS, MED and USCG-approved pyrotechnic marine distress signals to the commercial and leisure marine sectors, marketed under the globally recognised brands Pains Wessex, Comet, Oroquieta and Aurora. Next year it will celebrate 150 years in the business.

Ross Wilkinson, CEO of Wescom Group, believes it will expand the group’s presence in the marine survival market, enhancing its profile as a source of marine distress and safety signalling.

He said:

MRT, based in Yorkshire, UK, has been manufacturing and supplying man overboard safety systems and personal locator beacons to vessels and other marine facilities in the offshore oil and gas, defence, commercial marine and renewable industries worldwide since 1975. The company was born out of a life experience of founder David Marshall, when he was thrown overboard into the shark-infested waters of the South Pacific in 1960. After several hours, he is rescued – by complete chance – by a passing supply barge, and the idea for MRT and the Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) was sown.

Ryan Petit, CEO of MRT, said:

In 2021, the Wescom Group acquired defence signalling manufacturer PW Defence to expand its product portfolio in the defence market and international sales network.
